Is it Time for Furnace Service or Replacement?

When winter strikes and we start taking calls about furnaces that aren't producing heat, most of them can be traced back to the lack of furnace service and maintenance. If furnace issues are not addressed, your system may suddenly stop operating and leave you and your family in the cold. However, there are a few warning signs you can watch for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system breaks down.

Furnace Age

The normal life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's smart to start furnace shopping now. Selecting a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make in a hurry. Give yourself a bit of time to view and weigh all of your options.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Furnaces lose efficiency as they get older and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been correctly maintained. Envision the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that could be going towards purchasing a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Furnace Repairs

The last two years of a furnace's life are when your system encounters the most breakdowns. Take a moment to add up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the previous two years - a new system may be more cost effective.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any weird sounds coming from your system? Furnaces start making strange noises at the end of their lifecycle. If your furnace is cycling on and off frequently or blowing cold air, it's time to look at getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home efficiently. Your home could start feeling stuffy and anyone with allergies might notice an uptick in their symptoms. A few other red flags are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.
