Here is a short list of terms that may come up during the discussion:
SEER Rating – SEER stands for the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. It is the most commonly used measure of the efficiency of a residential central air conditioning system. A higher SEER rating means the system is more efficient and will require lower energy costs to cool the building. Older air conditioning systems are likely to have a lower SEER, perhaps 5 or 6, than a newer, more efficient system, which could have a SEER of anywhere from 13 to 22.
Single Stage System – A single-stage air conditioner uses a single speed compressor. The compressor runs at full capacity 100% of the time, sometimes cooling the home too quickly during milder summer days. When this situation occurs, the occupants may feel uncomfortable because the system has not operated long enough to dehumidify.
Two-Stage System – A two-stage air conditioner uses a two-speed compressor. The air conditioner will always attempt to satisfy the thermostat at low capacity (approximately 50 percent of the total capacity). This allows adequate running time to dehumidify the living area and make the occupants feel more comfortable. After a set period of time at low capacity, the compressor will automatically go to high capacity to satisfy the thermostat. This two-stage system adds comfort and reduces cost of operation.
